Miles was moving to a new office space at Microsoft. He was bummed about losing his newly acquired window. To get the most out of his new bland space his girlfriend decided to give him an OfficeShui™ consultation for his birthday.
Upon arrival we could see that his new desks and computers were set up, and his basic work tools were in place. His space was a clean palette; especially compared to his slightly disheveled old one we saw pictures of.
Even though Miles wasn’t quite sure about doing this “OfficeShui™ thing”, he opened up to us when being asked about his challenges, goals and desires for his life. He revealed what he wanted from his career, his challenge making big decisions with confidence, and what images were personally inspiring to him. We also talked about the work tools and systems he needed to function with ease.
Since paper clutter and filing issues were not a problem in this wired Microsoft office, we moved straight to furniture placement and giving Miles’ space a style and motivational vitality he desired. After talking over our ideas and making sure they were right for Miles, we left him with a small list of things to acquire from the facilities management and purchase from a few local retailers. We also made sure our suggestions fit his budget.
Checking in two weeks later Miles had a few more things to buy and set up. He needed another week before his office would be complete (with his girlfriend’s help).
When we visited we expected to help Miles pull everything together, but it was all done and looked great! Miles had a huge smile on his face. This once skeptic was now a full believer in the power of OfficeShui™ and positive change. He told us how energized, inspired and confident he felt, and it showed.
So, what did Miles do?
- He added a second bookshelf to hold all of his resources, supplies and awards, and fill the awkward open space behind him.
- He stored his smaller office items, not in daily use, in black containers from Storeables and placed a black Samurai statue next to them symbolizing strength and confidence in himself and his career.
- An elephant tapestry was hung to warm the white walls and give him a sense of connectedness to the greater world.
- He added another white board to keep pertinent meeting/code notes.
- As a Tango and Blues dancer, he felt inspired by some of the great Lindy Hop performers of the 40’s, so three framed photos were placed in his Fame/Rank area to inspire his creativity and urge him to act on his instincts.
- He also added plants and a fountain to bring a bit of nature into his workspace.
Could we make up for his missing window? According to Miles, he feels great! And, with his desk facing the door at a slight angle (an empowering desk position), Miles can even get a view through the building’s windows in front of him.
