Lynne and Steve were parents of two teenage daughters. They lived in a 4000 square foot home with ample room, but spent most of their time in their bedrooms, kitchen and TV room. After an initial feng shui consultation we determined the priorities: create comfortable gathering spaces throughout the house, foster peace of mind and body while at home, and inspire the family to share their place with others.

Clutter clearing was the first step to “good feng shui “ in this house, as it is with most homes. Without the piles of stuff this family felt motivated to take on more changes inside and outside their home.

Due to its original architecture the house was sparse on natural light. Lynne desired an open space to clear her mind and get quiet, as well as a room the whole family could enjoy. A sunroom over the garage was the perfect solution. Local architects and contractors were brought in to design and build this new space with an 18-foot skylight, a south facing deck with full window exposure from inside, as well as eastern dormer windows to match the rest of the house. A full bath, closet and built-ins were included to accommodate guests, plus a storage closet to make up for the lacking closet space in the master bedroom.

Right off the living room, the library housed a piano, books and a few pieces of older bamboo furniture. Located in the Relationship gua, we decided to make this into a music room, bringing the drum set, guitars, and horns up from the basement to join the piano so friends and family could all come to play and share music. We added a larger couch, leather chairs and a rug to give a comfortable lounge feel to the room.

The girl’s rooms had two twin beds each to accommodate rare overnight guests. The rooms’ girths could hold both beds without a problem, but Lynne knew that growing teenage girls also need furniture like vanities or mirrors, desks, floor pillows or comfy chairs to sit in while on the phone, plus their existing bookcases and bedside tables. The girls got rid of one bed each and added a few new furniture items of their choice. One of the girl’s bedrooms was switched with the office, now both rooms were in the back of the house with their shared bathroom in between. This gave the master bedroom more privacy and created a new family office that flowed into the new sunroom. Their rooms now feel more personalized and functional for their day-to-day needs.

Choosing paint color, fabric for window treatments, furniture, bath and bed linens, light fixtures, rugs, art and accessories gave each room its own personality and enhanced the energy. We chose an earthy palette of greens, yellows, browns, beiges, purples, and a hint of wine and blue to move through this somewhat conservative yet comfortable home. Plants were added where needed. The family’s personal touches were completed using artwork of many variations that connected with each of them
